Gynecomastia is a condition of enlarged breasts in men. It can be the result of hormonal changes, hereditary conditions, certain diseases or the use of prescription medications. It can also develop as the result of excessive alcohol consumption, marijuana use, cigarette and other tobacco product use, and anabolic steroids. This common condition can be closely tied to problems with confidence, self-esteem and feeling healthy and attractive. Affecting both adolescent and adult men, it may cause avoidance of certain physical activities and intimacy, in attempt to hide the condition.
Gynecomastia is characterized by excess localized fat, an overgrowth of glandular tissue or a combination of both. The condition can be present in one or both breasts. If you have enlargement of the breasts, male breast reduction surgery may be right for you. Generally speaking, Gynecomastia can be treated by removal of the excess fat and/or glandular tissue, in some cases additional skin may also need to be removed. The results of these procedures are a better proportioned chest and improved self-confidence so that you can return to the activities you enjoy.
A consultation with Dr. Geoghegan is the first step to determine how best to approach your individual case. This consultation is designed to educate you about breast reduction surgery options in a non-pressured environment. A thorough history and exam will be performed to determine if any additional testing such as blood work or mammogram are required. Your privacy and comfort are our foremost concerns during this process.
Depending on the size and type of Gynecomastia you have, there are several surgical techniques that can be used. When the enlargement is primarily due to excess fatty tissue, liposuction techniques may be used alone. This involves use of a small hollow tube or cannula along with suction to remove the excess tissue in a controlled manner. When more glandular tissue is present excisional techniques may be recommended. Excision may also be necessary if the areola (dark colored area around nipple) needs to be repositioned or reduced or if excess skin needs to be removed.
The incision pattern for the excisional techniques will vary based on your individual needs. Dr. Geoghegan will discuss with you which approach is right for you.
