Abdominoplasty, more commonly known as a tummy tuck can help to flatten or re-shape the abdomen and waistline. This surgical procedure removes excess fat and skin to achieve a tighter and flatter abdomen. In some cases an abdominoplasty can also restore the natural position of the abdominal muscles by repairing these weakened or widened muscles. This creation of an “internal corset” can help to create an abdominal profile which is smoother and firmer, enhancing your appearance in and out of clothes.
Even those men and women with otherwise normal body weight can develop loose and sagging skin or a protuberant abdomen. Common causes of this are multiple pregnancies, aging, heredity, and significant changes in weight. The best candidates for this surgical procedure are those in good medical condition, maintaining a stable weight but despite weight loss and/or an exercise program still have fat pockets or skin laxity.
Abdominal contouring can be performed through a variety of techniques. When there is minimal skin laxity or sagging, abdominal fat may be removed by liposuction alone. When the excess fat is combined with loose, excess skin, a tummy-tuck is used to remove both the unwanted fat and redundant skin. In addition, when the abdominal muscles have become separated, in a condition called rectus diastasis, an abdominoplasty procedure can correct this at the same time.
If the condition is mild and sagging skin and fatty deposits are isolated to the lower abdomen only, a mini-abdominoplasty can usually be performed to help tighten and contour the area. When there is more significant sagging skin and fat to remove, I will treat a larger area which may extend from the lower rib area to the pubic bone. The shape and length of the incision will be determined by the amount of correction necessary in your case. In addition, those women with existing scars from cesarean section can often be incorporated or revised for new scars.
