A facelift also known as a rhytidectomy is a surgical procedure that is performed to rejuvenate and improve the signs of aging in the face and neck. A facelift is designed to correct sagging in the midface, repair loss of muscle tone in the lower face that creates the appearance of jowls, remove loose skin and excess fat, improve deep creases between the nose and mouth and reposition fat that has fallen or is displaced.
Each year more than 150,000 men and women undergo a facelift to address concerns in the lower 2/3 of the face. This procedure which gives a rested, more youthful appearance is often combined with other procedures including a necklift, eyelid surgery, browlift, and other rejuvenation techniques. A facelift will not change your fundamental appearance and does not stop the aging process, but can be a great way to achieve your rejuvenation goals.
Typically these procedures are performed under general anesthesia and may take four hours or longer depending on the technique that has been chosen as best for you. Additional procedures may be required in addition to your facelift and these will be addressed with you during your consultation to meet your desires and goals. During a traditional facelift, incisions are made beginning above the ear in the hairline, extending down the face in front of the ear and then behind the ear and then back into the hairline. Following the incisions, the loose skin is released and a layer of tissue called the SMAS (superficial musculoaponeurotic system) is exposed. This layer is then repositioned and tightened, the skin is re-draped in a natural position and excess skin removed. Small tubes or drains may be used to help drain away blood, these would then be removed in the next 1-2 days. Your face will be bandaged when you awaken. After a short time in the recovery room allowing you to fully awaken, you may either go home or stay overnight in one of the recovery facilities that Dr. Geoghegan recommends.
